Companions of the Sea

In his painting, “Companions of the Sea,” Wyland pays homage to the enduring bonds that dolphins share. Dolphins are social creatures who often depend on each other for hunting, mating, and defending their pods. “The social relationships that these animals form are believed to be very long lasting,” Wyland says. “They may travel in groups as large as forty or in simple pairs as the two dolphins in this painting are doing. That closeness is one of the reasons dolphins have always been one of my favorite subjects. It’s easy to imagine that these two are simply enjoying a blissful moment together as they comb through the reefs in their underwater home.”
