Wyland’s Studio

ABOUT THE STUDIO

Dividing his time between Hawaii's north shore, the calm tranquility of the Florida Keys, and the world-renowned artist's colony of Laguna Beach, Wyland is never far from one of his personal art studios. These creative retreats - each personally designed by Wyland with artifacts from his travels - provide the backdrop for his classic works and his newest paintings and sculptures. "My studio is where I take the images in my mind's eye and recreate them in the medium that best reflects them. It's a place where I can get inspired and explore my subjects."

ORIGINAL PAINTINGS

Much of Wyland's art is inspired by diving with and photographing marine wildlife. His up-close studies of these animals in their natural habitats provide the essential reference materials to draw upon when creating his compositions. "I spend weeks in the studio working on my oil paintings," he says. "Over the course of that time, the work will evolve from a blur of color until the background comes into focus. Then there is that moment of revelation when I see how a particular animal might swim or how I should position the fish, turtles, and other life among a coral reef, for instance. Every new piece is an adventure."

SCULPTURES

Years after Wyland had become a successful artist, he began to cast his own marine life sculptures of whales and dolphins, everything from small maquettes to life-size dolphins and a series of bronze tables. His first bronze sculpture "Children of the Sea" was inspired by an early painting of the same title from 1993 and became an instant success with my collectors. "The final results speak for themselves," Wyland says, "but it all starts in the studio."
